Principles of Design Found in Nature

Early in the morning before my workday starts I love to sit at my bay window seat reading my latest book of interest and enjoy the beauty of rural living. Watching the trees go through the changes of the seasons or the deer passing by.

Today, mesmerized by the morning blanket of snow and how that changed my view, I saw things a little differently and was compelled to take a couple of photos. Have you ever wondered why some scenes look pleasing to the eye when observing nature?

As a trained designer and self taught painter/photographer I start to notice principles of design or elements of art that you can find in nature.

designs in natureThis photo represents several principles of design. Notice the repetition and proximity of the two corners of the deck railing, the roof and the deck pickets.

Also, look at the alignment of the tree branches and the roof. Another interesting element is that part of the deck looks like the tree trunk.

Snowy TreesThe elements of art came from snow on the trees that created a soft unity of color and texture in this photo that is normally not there.

Take a few minutes each day to really observe your own surroundings. Is there a pattern in the books on your shelf? Are there lovely shapes in the nature that exists in your yard? You might find you want to record these with your camera or record in a journal.
